Quail Portrait.

Ground-dwelling California Quail are welcome common residents in Okanagan residential and rural neighbourhoods here in British Columbia, except when they eat up entire rows of new spinach seedlings in our gardens!

A unique cluster of six feathers creates the distinctive “Pompadour” Elvis look that we recognize immediately as they scuttle in family groups across open areas to nests that are well-hidden under shrubs. They are prey for many creatures, but domestic cats are one of the main threats to survival for young chicks.
